Mood Disorders

According to one source, 19 million Americans and 5 million children and teenagers suffer with depression and another 18 million Americans suffer with anxiety disorders.

While our stressful lifestyles often get blamed for these conditions there are many underlying processes that can contribute to anxiety and depression. Often these conditions are simply systems of other illness or disease processes. Treatment of anxiety or depression without a thorough investigation of its cause is simply a cosmetic cover up not a solution or cure. Studies report that in 2002 8.5% of American were taking an anti-depressant medication and this number surely continues to rise. Other studies report the dangers of anti-depressant medications and the increased suicide risk associated with these medications. Does it seem odd to anyone else that a drug that is supposed to help you feel less depressed increases the risk of suicide? There are certainly better treatments available, the most important being identification of underlying issues and their treatment.

Improper thyroid function can lead to feelings of anxiety and depression. For women, hormonal alterations associated with the menstrual cycle or menopause can cause mood disorders. Even chronic Candida infections and allergies can contribute to hormonal imbalances leading to mood disorders.
